Sign Up for Anchor Place Training: Tuesday, February 4

Want to have great fun while serving the community? Anchor Place might be a great place for you. The Rotary Club of Dunwoody played an important part in getting Anchor Place off the ground last May, and the Dunwoody Rotarians who are volunteering for this twice-a-week respite care program are "having a blast" (to quote Fred Bounds). We serve a community of people with memory issues - who come to share art, games, music and fellowship while the family members taking care of them have a few hours to call their own.

If you're interested, you can click here to sign up for a training session next Tuesday, February 4.

GRSP Leadership Weekend
We Need Your Help and Welcome Your Participation - February 14-16,2025

With just two weeks until the GRSP Leadership Weekend, we need your help.

Host Families: Thanks to those of you who have signed up! We need 5-6 more hosts, willing to house 2 students from Friday night to Sunday morning - bed and breakfast plus transportation to and from weekend events - mostly at the Dunwoody Annex on North Shallowford.

Games for Friday Night Game Night: Meredith Morris is collecting games for our Friday night pizza/game night - and promises to protect and return them to you after the weekend. And everyone is welcome to join this event at the Dunwoody Annex.

Food and Set-up Helpers: We need at least 3-4 people Friday (and Friday evening) as well as a few people Saturday (8-5) to help with snacks and housekeeping, and a few Sunday for snacks and then clean-up (sessions finish between 12 and 1 on Sunday).

We also welcome anyone who would like to join us for pizza and game night on Friday, or food packing on Saturday morning. You can also come watch Shark Tank on Sunday morning, where students compete for a $1,000 grant for the service project they create as part of the weekend's activity.

Let Jackie Cuthbert know if you can help - 770-597-1183 or cuthbert@mindspring.com.

Be the Voice
Bring Canned Goods This Friday

We are partnering with Dunwoody Elementary's" Be the Voice program" in a special Soup-er Bowl event. How? By collecting soup, other canned goods and non-perishables that will be delivered to Malachi's Storehouse on February 4. There are a couple of ways you can help:

  • bring a can of soup or other canned goods or non-perishables to this Friday's meeting
  • volunteer to help count and organize donations at Dunwoody Elementary - at 2:00 pm on either January 30 or February 3.

This is our first year supporting Be the Voice - where we encourage students to be kind and supportive of each other and the people in their community. The Soup-er Bowl project offers a fine opportunity to support what they are learning. In this Souper-Bowl, everybody wins!

Remembering Past President Milton Baker

We learned this week that RCD Charter Member and Past President Milton Baker passed away on Friday, January 24 at the age of 76. Milton was my sponsor when I joined Rotary; I met him when Milton was District Conference Chair during Bill Mulkey's year as District Governor (1998) - and soon he had enlisted me to join the club and his membership committee - where I sent the weekly bulletin and a note to any member who missed a Friday meeting.

I remember a story of Dunwoody Rotarians returning from District Conference in 1987 with few if any awards - and promising that wouldn't happen again. No pressure on Milton Baker - the incoming Club President. The following year, Milton became the first Dunwoody President to win a Best Club Award at District Conference in 1988. In our early days as a club, Milton also earned the title, "Membership Czar" - leading our recruiting efforts for many of those years. He was a Paul Harris Fellow +4 and a Will Watt Fellow.

A memorial service for Milton will be held Monday, February 3, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA 30076, followed by a memorial gathering from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
